Sleepless in Seattle

Over the years with my many trips, there have been some very funny situations that I have found myself caught up in. Here is one that I have not told to many people until now.

One of the major issues when you travel is time zone changes. You board a plane in one time zone, fly many hours, and deplane in another time zone. There are many ways to combat this; my method is to not sleep on the flight and upon arrival I eat and sleep at the new time zone.
I had occasion to travel to Seattle, Washington to meet with clothing suppliers that were headquartered there. I stayed at the Alexis Hotel which is located right down the street from the famous Pike Place Market. It is a very nice hotel, and one I would recommend highly.
I was up at the crack of dawn to make the 7 a.m. flight. I arrived at 1:30 p.m which is 4:30 p.m. Eastern time. So, I have been up nearly 12 hours and just getting off the plane.
My first appointment was not until the next morning, so I checked into the hotel and wandered around Pike Place Market, killing time and trying to adjust to the new time zone.
I had a quiet dinner and then watched some TV until 10 p.m. (1 a.m. East coast) My head was really doing the bobbing routine as it was nearing a 20 hour day. I fell right to sleep and slept soundly until 4 a.m. (7 a.m.) Bang, wide awake and no going back to sleep for me. I lay there reviewing my alternatives. I wondered if the newspaper could have been delivered yet, so I padded across to the door. Now, I have to confess, at this stage in my life I did not wear any night-clothes to bed. This could be a whole other topic to debate, but this is the way it was at the time.
I carefully opened the door and stuck my head out to see if the coast was clear, it was, and there was my paper resting nicely on the floor in front of my door. I bent down to retrieve it. Un-noticed by me, the door was silently swinging closed behind me! The cold brass door knob hit me square in the cheeks. Surprised, I gave a startled cry and an involuntary jump into the hallway to the sound of the door clicking shut behind me!! Seriously, what are the chances that this door knob was the exact height as my cheeks and that the door was on hinges designed to close by itself ? Really.
Now it is 4 a.m. and I am standing in the hallway of a very nice hotel holding the Seattle Times in my birthday suit.

Oh boy this is not good. This nice hotel does not have phones on each floor so calling the front desk is not an option. That would be way too  simple.  And I am certainly not going to knock on someone’s door asking for help.  So I separate the paper; putting one section to my front side and one section to my back side. I walk (crab) my way to the elevator, press the button, wait forever for it to arrive, quickly hop aboard and press the lobby button. Praying is not the exact word I would use but I was sure hoping no one else in the hotel was having my time zone sleeping issues. The elevator reached the first floor and slowly opened … to an empty lobby. Whew, catching some luck. But I am still not going to just walk out into the lobby and cause someone to have a heart attack or quick call to 911. The front desk is not out in the open but is a part of the right wall. So, in a loud whisper I call out to the desk asking if some one was there. Again, at 4 a.m. in the morning what are the odds that the desk is empty and the concierge is sleeping in the back? And out pops a head from behind the desk. He looks around the lobby trying to find the source of the voice and then lands on me standing in the elevator displaying the newspaper, smiling weakly. What could be going through his head; drunk, crazy, is this guy actually staying here, should I call security? Eventually he comes out from behind the desk but does not come any closer. I wouldn’t have either. In a few simple sentences I explain my plight, assuring him that I am in fact a guest and not a lunatic and could prove it once I get into my room. Shaking his head he gets a key and joins me in the elevator, as far away from me as possible.  It turns out that the night clerk is a college student making extra money and studying during the quiet times. He also has a sense of humor.  On our slow ride up to my floor he suggests that the newspaper hiding my front should  be the want ads and the one hiding my rear be the sports section. Hahaha. Not to be outdone, I countered that maybe the front should be breaking news and the back section the classified ads under ‘needs help’. What else can you do in this situation but make fun.  We reach the floor, he unlocks the door, I hastily slip on a robe and confirm my guest status. He wishes me a good rest of the night and I can hear his chuckles as he walks down the hallway to the elevator.

I stayed at the hotel for two more nights and every time I entered the lobby I could feel the eyes of the staff following me across the lobby and into the elevator. But, being a very nice hotel, I never did hear any more about it. (I never did stay at the Alexis again!)

23 hours in the air- Florida to Singapore

Yep, that is correct. Last month I flew from Florida to Singapore and waist the air for twenty four hours. Tampa to Denver 3 1/2 hours, Denver to Taipei, Taiwan; 12 1/2 hours and Taipei to Singapore 8 hours. Now that is not counting the time spent on the ground between flights. Let me put it another way. I left on Monday morning and landed in Singapore at 1:25 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Below I am showing the map that runs continuously during the flight depicting where you are, where you have been and how long it will take to destination. Also altitude, temperature and speed. What found humorous was the town of Cold Bay. Now it is Alaska and it is cold…..so how colder can Cold Bay be to be named that? Not wanting to find out in person.

The other picture is the map showing the world and what is in daylight and what is in darkness. We are flying west, of course, but at such a speed that the entire flight will be done in daylight! It took me awhile to wrap my head around this and definitly screwed with my sleep habits.

Now where was I?

20131222-111139.jpgLike my sons would say; a geek I am not!

I got through Singapore and into Indonesia and realized that pictures were not being added as I had planned. Also the different countries, plane mode off/on, WiFi on/off, every location had another way of signing onto WiFi….ugh. More than half the time that did not work even when you followed the directions. Also a FYI, Starbucks overseas do not have free WiFi! Equally terrifying was the fact that there were certain places that I could not get any reception! Can you imagine being cut off from the world, complete silence, no pings, no alerts? So I decided that a virtual trip was not going to happen. And now I will try to write my trip in hind sight which probably is better as I am rested and functional where on the trip there were times I was physically present but not mentally.

The photo above if from my plane window flying from Jakarta to the middle of the island of Java. You can see the cluster of houses in villages and then the huge expanse of the squares which will be the rice paddies. we were there just before the monsoon season which will fill up the paddies.

More Grand Hyatt photos

Here is one of the major reasons for my love of this hotel. This is just part of the pool area. Little water falls, water plants in some areas and chairs placed so you can relax peacefully. There is a small restaurant so you can grab a bite after a swim.
This pool area sits on top of a shopping mall so it is elevated off the street and there is no city noise. Really quite unique.

Jakarta

20131231-162635.jpgThis photo is the airport. Notice that the gate is etched into the grass. The motif is very relaxed and Polynesian . The baggage claim area is old and shoddy with porters running every where. Luggage was 20 minutes jn coming. Remember we are in a very relaxed country. No need to rush, you’ll get sweaty.
The taxi/limo area was bedlam! Everyone trying to make a buck. Take your bags for you , they have friend which has a great taxi. Even air con in it! I had two hundred S’pore dollars which I converted into Rupiahs, the Indo money. Hang on now as the conversion rate was 11800 Rupiahs to the dollar!! I had one million seven. hundred thousand of this stuff, so I am feeling pretty large now. I am tipping 10,000 bills like I had invented the money .
Now the next experience; Indo traffic. I have been coming here for 20 years and the traffic is always horrific. And I was not disappointed . What would take 20 minutes is a hour and a half stop/ go, brake lights flashing affair. The construction,I swear it is the same as when I first started coming here. When you do finally reach the hotel you are panting from the trip.At the start of the driveway you are stopped by the hotel security, 4 of them. They smile politely as they open all the doors, hood, trunk and roll a large mirror on a wheel under the car! We then proceed to the entrance .We are bustled out of the car to line up to go through the security and be wandedI am almost running to the front desk to get to my room!

Garuda Airlines

Flew out of S’pore on the Indonesian national airline. It is a swift flight of 2 hours but they still serve a full dinner. And that dinner is pictured. Fish is under the golden sauce, rice in the center and vegetables at the top. I am a suspicious person regarding sauces on food over seas. What are they hiding they don t want to show me? Or is the food old and they are covering up the smell? No matter as I passed on the meal as I did not like the color combos!

Ugly colors

Wish balls in the lagoon

20131204-205047.jpg

I saw this from my window and could not figure what was going on. I asked the hotel staff and they explained it is a S’pore tradition to have people write their wishes on plastic balls for the new year and the city puts them in the lagoon until after the firs of the year. One of the staff guided me to where is was being done and I added my wishes on a ball!
Who know? It certainly can’t hurt, right.

Singapore

20131204-203655.jpg

We arrived in S’pore this morning at 12:30 a.m.
It was 23 hours total air time and 30 hours with the connections. A good hot bath and a change of clothes worked wonders. You want to burn the clothes you came in as you had them on so long.
The photo is a shot of the view from my room. No joke, the Ritz Carleton is the real deal and in the top hotels in the world.
We caught 6 hours sleep and spent the day at our agents offices meeting with the factories from Malaysia and Vietnam. We reviewed the styles that they made from our tech packs sent out last month.
It is very time consuming as you must go over every detail so as to not leave some item out. The cost depends on the exact reveiw. It is very hard to do when you are in another time zone. I was drinking Chinese tea to keep myself in the game. At 3 p.m. you get the wooden head where you are physically there but your mind in not functioning. We reviewed probably 50 styles during the day and will repeat this again tomorrow with another set of factories. It can become very tedious quickly.
We just arrived this morning but we have to pack for we leave tomorrow from work to fly to Jakarta, Indonesia.
So I am off to get it done so I can relax.

The second leg

I am sitting here in my little cubby having finished lunch which you see to the right.
I have also viewed a full movie and there is still 11 hours to go!!
The second leg of the trip is on All Nippon Airways (ANA) and is bound for Narita airport in Tokyo Japan, The map of the flight shows we are flying over Dawson Creek and Juneau is not far in the distance. The outside temperature is -57 degrees.
The plane is a 777 which means all business class has their very own individual space which is set apart from the other passengers! What a blessing that is as you can scratch when and where you want and not offend anyone. The seat lies flat to give a nice bed and they furnish comforter and pillows
But I am blessed this trip with a small baby directly in front of me. Wow I should buy a lottery ticket. The sweet little thing alternately screams to make a demonstration and watch mom and dad jump through hoops, to try and climb over the seat to see me! Oh the life of a merchant prince.
I have also discovered that there is no WiFi so there is going to be many messages sent at the same time when i arrive in Narita….in 11 hours.
(oh the baby is screaming again. How sweet it is. You might want to watch CNN to see me led off in handcuffs….Just kidding)
